WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT ME

I WAS BORN TO DO THIS.

Growing up, I was your typical bookworm - something that has stuck with me. I love to read. With this, I’ve developed a critical eye for good writing.

This hobby served me well throughout my schooling career and into university. It was only when I packed up my life in Cape Town and moved to Stellenbosch for my postgraduate studies that I finally met my match. Everything changed when I entered the postgraduate research space - literature reviews, study designs, data analysis - overwhelming new concepts and enough to consider packing up and going back home. Little did I know at the time, I had a secret weapon. A formidable research supervisor who pushed me to my absolute limits to produce excellent research.

A supervisor who gave up hours of his time each week to teach me everything he knew. This included skills and tips you can’t learn from books, an exceptional work ethic, and a unique ability to spot an error. One of his most memorable comments on my many drafts was ‘I’m not going to mention this again.’ This pushed me to consistently improve my work with every visit to his office. Fast forward a few years, I graduated with my Master of Arts in Psychology, cum laude. This remains one of the greatest, and most challenging, experiences of my life. I still draw from those lessons every day.

When I began my working career in the postgraduate research space at my alma mater, I realised just how fortunate I had been. I was confronted by stressed and confused postgraduate students, and overburdened academics.

I found my passion - a researcher’s behind-the-scenes best friend and fairy godmother.

I began offering support, tips, and advice to students in my department, and engaged in supporting research processes wherever I could. Through developing these skills and gaining critical exposure within key research spaces (by working through countless examiner reports and peer-reviewed feedback), I have have built up a formidable skill set within this environment. When a respected colleague and friend encouraged me to use this as a transferable skill - I took the plunge a few weeks after my son was born and completed my first paid editing job.

To date, I’ve worked with students and staff across six higher education institutions within South Africa - I use every opportunity to learn something new. What started as my first hobby, turned into a passion project, and eventually progressed into my dream job.
